Core Job Purpose: Teaching of medical Biochemistry/Molecular and Cell Biology and Microbiology to first, second, and third year Medical and Health Sciences students; and coordinating integrated Basic Medical Science modules.
Key Performance Areas:
- Teaching first, second, and third year medical and Faculty of Health Sciences students
- Coordinating the delivery of the first year Basic Science module and the related required curriculum development
- Assessment of students, including formative and summative assessment
- Providing timeous academic and other support to students
- Contributing to the development of research within the faculty
- Establishment and oversight of a Biochemistry teaching laboratory.
- At least three years’ experience teaching Medical and Health science students
- Up-to-date subject knowledge
- Experience with curriculum development and module management of Health Science courses
- Experience in up-to-date teaching and with excellent student-focused teaching skills
- Sound research experience in Health Sciences
- Good managerial and administrative skills
- MSWord, PowerPoint and Excel skills and the willingness to learn internal software programs.
- An academic qualification with a Ph.D in Biochemistry/Molecular and Cellular Biology or an MBChB with registration as a Specialist with the HPCSA or
- A clinical qualification with a Ph.D or a Ph.D thesis in the above that has been submitted for assessment where the applicant is awaiting a successful outcome
- A qualification in Health Sciences Education will be an added advantage.
- Accreditation/membership/affiliation with a recognised University /professional /national scientific council or HPCSA where applicable.
- A good success rate in teaching and learning, evidenced by sustained positive feedback from teaching surveys, teaching awards or through other forms of evidence
- Familiarity with the use of creative teaching methodologies and learning technologies, including blended and online approaches to improve student learning
- Ability to actively engage with students and provide a student-focused learning approach
- Facilitate horizontal and vertical integration of content across modules
- Ability to provide oversight to ensure that assessments are quality-controlled and standardised, and that learning materials and equipment are in place
- Ability to teach or co-supervise appropriate sections of Honours and/or Masters’ courses as required
- Knowledge of the requirements and operationalisation of an effective, functional Biochemistry teaching laboratory.
- Experience in pre-clinical research and/or clinical trials’ research and the potential/willingness to contribute to the development of a research unit within the Medical programme.
- Ability to contribute to an inclusive and collegial environment that encourages a high level of performance, communication and teamwork
- Ability to problem-solve under pressure and to work collaboratively to resolve problems
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively and work with people in an interdisciplinary, multicultural environment.
