Purpose of the position: The main purpose of this role is to provide a leadership and management role in the various aspects of student affairs at the university. This will include, inter alia, liaising with elected student bodies, student organisations, residences, academic and other support services as well as the general promotion of a culture of learning.

Requirements: • A relevant doctoral degree • At least 5 years’ experience in a senior leadership role within higher education • Experience of interaction with student governance in higher education and an understanding of student culture in a transforming institution • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in some of the following areas Student Development, Sports and recreation, Residence management, Student counselling, Student wellness, Student Health, Student Governance • Experience in managing change and maintaining sound interpersonal relations • Proven executive level managerial or administrative experience or expertise • Demonstrable general dynamic leadership and management abilities • Pragmatic knowledge of quality assurance • Sound entrepreneurial, negotiating, and financial management skills • Proven strategic planning and implementation abilities • Familiarity with the higher education legislative environment and transformation imperatives • Demonstrable ability in conceptualising, planning and implementation of student development programmes and initiatives.

Key performance areas: Strategy development and execution: • Develop and implement strategies for the following Student Affairs portfolios: * Student governance * Residences * Student involvement in community outreach initiatives * Management of student regulations and discipline * Student health and wellness in conjunction with Campus Health and Wellness * Promotion and development of student leadership and student welfare * Liaison between students and management, between students and faculties and internal and external parties * Management of student bodies, student organisations or societies and relations with parents * General promotion of a learning culture • Identify priorities for implementation • Develop and implement systems and processes • Investigate and make recommendations on the value add of the components managed • Implement a leadership philosophy and culture that will support the implementation of the WSU mission, vision, values and strategic imperatives.

Student Affairs Policy & Procedure Management: • Enhance/develop and implement Student Affairs policies and procedures • Monitor compliance to relevant policies and procedures • Conduct policy and procedure audits as required • Provide continuous feedback to line management, staff and students on implementation practices related to policies and procedures.

Safety, health and environmental management: • Responsible for section 16 (2) responsibilities assigned by OHS Act • Ensure compliance with SHE policies and procedures.

Quality assurance and risk management: • Ensure the implementation of the quality assurance standards/ measures to meet both internally set standards and the requirements of external bodies • Risk management.

Resource management: human resources: • Revisit structures for its appropriateness to assist the department in achieving its strategic priorities • Contribute toward recruitment and selection process • Performance contracts for all staff and regular reviews • Staff development • Promote sound employment relations • Human resource administration • Staffing and operating budgets • Financial management • Asset management.

Monitoring, evaluation and reporting: • Monitor Student Affairs health indicators, identify problem/ concern areas and communicate to relevant stakeholders • Identify trends and issues in Portfolio Areas and communicate to relevant stakeholders • Conduct audits/reviews to determine current application of student affairs systems and processes and report on results • Develop relevant reports as and when required • Research and implement best practices.
