The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) strives to improve the nation’s health and quality of life by funding and conducting relevant and leading health research. It further aims to promote equity, career development and progression.

These are 5-year contract posts and are based at the SAMRC Cape Town or Pretoria or Durban Offices.

VICE PRESIDENT: INTRAMURAL RESEARCH (VP-IMR)

The SAMRC seeks to appoint a VP-ERIP who will lead, manage and transform the extramural research and internal portfolio of the SAMRC. The VP-ERIP will be responsible for enhancing the quality of science and health impact of research that is funded by the SAMRC with an emphasis on cutting edge, basic and solution driven research. The incumbent be responsible for extramural research and internal portfolio attributed to the position.

Qualifications and experience: A PhD in the field of Health Sciences or Medical Doctor (registered with HPCSA) • experience at executive leadership level with at least 3 years’ in a similar position • an understanding of the national and international health research environment and health priorities • experience and/or knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations including the SAMRC Act, NHA, PFMA, and the health research regulations, standards and best practices • an innovative and well-established (local and international) scientist, and holds an excellent track record in health research and knowledge of funding imperatives for health research • solid experience in a leadership position in an academic and/or research environment with expertise in grant-writing, contribution to strategic planning and implementation of initiatives to deliver on organizational strategic goals • an understanding of the research processes, peer-review and research grant funding processes and practices.
