Life coaching can be a great career choice for a people’s person who is naturally empathetic. A life coach is someone who helps people move forward and reach their personal and professional goals. They do this through listening, encouraging and coaching people through specific challenges to reach certain milestones. Unlike therapists and counsellors, life coaches are not there to discuss past experiences or emotional trauma. They are there to help a person better their current circumstances.
How do you know if life coaching is for you?
Do you enjoy listening to other people and helping them better their situation? Are you able to encourage people to come to their own conclusions instead of giving advice? Do you know how to ask questions that challenge someone to find their own solutions? Are you comfortable with knowing the details of someone’s personal and professional life? Are you prepared to keep their information private?
There are many soft skills you need to have in order to become a successful life coach. You need to be able to communicate effectively, actively listen and remain calm, even if a client is frustrating you. You also need to be able to communicate with all sorts of people from all sorts of backgrounds. It’s important that you are confident in what you say and the questions you ask. And, finally, it is vital that you are an ethical person with high standards of integrity.
How do you become a life coach?
You don’t need a degree in psychology in order to be a professional life coach. Or any qualifications, for that matter. However, courses and training will provide you with various methods and techniques you can use in order to help your clients in the best way possible. Aside from that, clients are more likely to trust someone who has a proper qualification from a reputable institution. Without training in this field, you will be relying on your instincts alone to help your clients and you may end up doing more harm than good if your instincts are incorrect.
Becoming a registered member of the ICF (International Coaching Federation) or COMENSA (Coaches and Mentors of South Africa) will give you credibility as a life or business coach. You’ll also be able to network with other coaches and find opportunities for work through them.
In order to be successful as a life coach, it is important that you are able to network and attract customers through a strong reputation. This may mean that in the beginning, you offer your services at a cheaper rate than your more experienced colleagues or competitors. But as you make your mark in the industry and become more confident, you should gradually increase your rate. Otherwise, you might end up taking on too many clients and overwork yourself.
What are the different types of life coaching you can do?
Not all life coaches are the same. You get life coaches who help people with their personal goals, fitness goals, professional goals, health goals and overall wellness goals. It’s a good idea to decide early on what type of life coach you would like to be. However, if you want to be a business coach, you should already know how to succeed in business by having experience in the corporate world. And if you want to be a fitness or health coach, it’s a good idea to receive some training if you haven’t spent time in either of those industries. You don’t want to end up encouraging your client to make the wrong choices.
There are many benefits of life coaching, and it can prove to be a profitable and fulfilling career. Now that you know a little more about it, perhaps you might find that it’s the perfect job for you!
